People frequently ask me what my favorite design style is, and I invariably answer “All of them”, because the style of each project is as unique as each client is. I do, however, maintain a common deniminator in my work, and that is executing each one from the perception of a room being a multimedia art installation. This does not, however, result in something as intimidating as it may sound, as each installation is developed specifically for the client’s functional needs. The interior design and architectural concepts are based on lifestyle preferences, structural mandates, space usage, color and style preferences, and, personality type. (I wasn’t a psych minor for nothing!)
Each completed project may be as dissimilar from one to the next as a Frank Gehrey design is to Versailles, but there is a presiding consistent component…approachability. My designs are consistently welcoming, serene and warm, as I have had a lot of requests throughout my career, but not once has a client said “I want a cold, uninviting space”! This is as true for residential projects as it is the restaurant and retail projects I have designed; they all say “Come in and relax!”
I achieve this anti-furniture showroom effect by focusing on the whole environment of the building making sure visual clues are repeated throughout the space by using color, pattern, line, scale, textures and, most importantly, the right balance of elements as represented by materials, shape and placement. Today’s vast resources of “Green” materials are making this easier to achieve, as a balance of nature is what my design style is all about. This is what makes a space livable, as the wrong balance can clash with one’s life as sure as plum clashes with puce.
The resulting composition of my interior art forms depends on all of the components being in harmony with each other, and to achieve this, each element must be thoroughly considered in it’s relationship with the other elements as well as the whole. I revel in always creating the new, the fresh, the non-derivative out of a world of materials and millenniums of history, to create interiors that are comforting, livable art-teriors.
